A BRIEF HISTORY

Monee Free Methodist Church was incorporated March 4, 1979 at a special society meeting of the First Free Methodist Church of Harvey, held at 111 East 148 Street. The Harvey Society was formed on February 4, 1892, began with worship in a pavilion stand in the southern area of the city, then moved to a vacant store, and built their first building at 146th and Sangamon Avenue in 1899. Two years later they moved to 15215 Center Avenue. In 1955, under the leadership of Rev. W. R. Thompson, building plans began. On September 1, 1960, under the leadership of Rev. L. H. Seifert, the congregation moved to their new church building at 148th and Lexington. Thirty four pastors served the Harvey congregation during their 87 year history. The last pastor of Harvey was Rev. Paul Leitzke.

The Monee church was formed after prayer and careful planning to meet the needs of Harvey FM members who had moved to the Monee/Peotone area and to bring the gospel to those in the growing south suburb area.

Ministry in Monee began in the fall of 1977 with outreach to children through the denominational midweek program known as CYC (Christian Youth Crusaders). The meetings were held at the Monee Elementary School.

On May 23 five acres of land on Monee-Manhattan Road just west of I-57 were purchased as the location for a future church building.

Worship services began Thanksgiving Sunday at 9:30am in 1977. The service was held in the Judge's Chambers of the Monee Village Hall/Courthouse. Pastor Paul Leitzke preached at Monee and then traveled to Harvey for the worship service there at 11:00am. A major outreach means in Monee was Vacation Bible School held at Monee Fireman's Park under the direction of Betty Garrett.

The Harvey church building was sold in November 1979 and the two congregations worshipped together for the first time on Thanksgiving Sunday at the Monee Elementary School since the courthouse location was not large enough for everyone attending. Groundbreaking for the new Monee facility took place on June 3, 1979, but approval for what would be the final building plans did not take place until August 30, 1981. Construction of the current multi-purpose building began in September 1981 and the first worship service was conducted Christmas Sunday, December 20, 1981, in the not quite completed building. A Dedication Service for the completed building was held on September 12, 1982 and included Bishop Clyde Van Valin, Superintendent J. Wesley Bennett, Monee Senior Pastor Paul Leitzke, and Monee Youth Pastor Don Jamerson, along with several former Harvey pastors.

More recently the church facility and grounds have undergone many changes and improvements. The parking lot has been expanded- doubling the capacity- and a parsonage was constructed in 2003. Three large crosses were erected and stand alongside the Rock donated to the church in the early years.  In 2006 a new lighted sign was installed.

The Monee church is looking forward to many more years of ministry in the community and desire to always turn every blessing back to praise!
