WHY FREE? WHY METHODIST?

The Free Methodist Church traces its roots back to the John Wesley and the Methodist Episcopal Church of England and America. The Free Methodist Church began in Pekin, NY on August 23, 1860 after pastors and laymen were expelled from the Methodist Episcopal Church due to the following convictions:

Pews should be free, not rented as was the practice.  The church should be for all no matter what their financial situation.

Worship should be free, not controlled through the liturgy by an outside church hierarchy.

Persons should be free, not kept as slaves.

Church members should be free from the grip of materialism so prevalent in the church of the day.  Dress and buildings were kept simple and plain in order that all may feel welcome and equal.

The Christians only loyalty should be to Jesus Christ and therefore members should be free from secret societies that required oaths of secrecy.
